Game Freak director Junichi Masuda appeared on the Japanese TV series Pokémon Smash! earlier today to announce the next main series Pokémon games. In a series first, the games appear to be direct sequels to Pokémon Black and White, and are titled Pokémon Black Version 2 and White Version 2. Also unusual is that the games will be for the Nintendo DS instead of upgrading to the 3DS. They will be released in Japan this June. No word on a North American release date yet, but they’re usually about one year after the Japanese release.
The mascots of Black and White Version 2 are two new forms of Kyurem, pictured above. Black Kyurem resembles Zekrom and will be the mascot for Black; White Kyurem has Reshiram’s traits and is the mascot of White. This reverses the mascot status of Zekrom and Reshiram from the original Black and White.
We’ll keep you posted with updates as more details about the games are released.
UPDATE FEBRUARY 28: Nintendo has posted a brief trailer indicating that that game will be coming out in the US “this fall”. No new information, but the quick turnaround time indicates that these games are more likely enhanced versions of B&W rather than totally new games.
